Ina Brosseau Marx and Allen Marx are the founders and codirectors of The Finishing School in Great Neck, New York, which offers one-day classes in the painted finish. They are also conservators of painted, gilded, oriental lacquer, and verre eglomise objects, and their work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University’s Garvan Collection, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the New York Historical Society, and prominent private collectors.
The Marxes have lectured and conducted demonstrations for the National Decorating Products Association, the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Smithsonian Institution, and many others. They recently founded The Decorative Painter’s Network, an information exchange for decorative painters. Robert Marx, a successful decorative painter, began working with his parents, Ina and Allen, in restoration commission in 1981. He joined the staff of The Finishing School in 1986.
